Why Volunteer?

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is defined by the European Commission as “the responsibility of enterprises for their impacts on society”.

CSR can take many forms, but one of the most common is for businesses to partner with charities and other organisations to improve the quality of life of people in the local community.

This partnership working can include different elements, such as direct financial support, practical help and assistance, and volunteering.

Building trust and developing strategic partnerships in the communities in which they operate is key to securing a company’s long-term sustainability and research has shown that companies who have employee volunteering programmes have more motivated and engaged employees, better productivity and, as a result of their improved public image, are more likely to attract new talent – notwithstanding the positive impact on society of the charities and non-profit organisations they are supporting.

Through volunteering, staff will have the opportunity to develop their skills and experience, which will help them become more effective and confident in the workplace, and in other situations.

Employee volunteering can also bring greater understanding and co-operation between colleagues and co-workers, an enhanced appreciation of their own (and other people’s) capabilities, and it encourages better communication, team work, decision making, and problem solving, as well as adding to a greater sense of wellbeing.

Volunteering has benefits for everyone - it benefits communities, it benefits businesses, and it benefits the volunteers.
